Week 25

A day that will go down in Valdivian history forever occurred this week. Papa John's opened here just across from the terminal in centro. I am thrilled to report that their pizza is just as delicious here in Chile as it is in the States. The day after it opened a member shared some of their leftover pizza with us at lunch that they had gotten the day before. Until then I didn't know that there was a store here. We might be visiting there sometime soon.

On a more important note, we started teaching 5 new people this week. Our goal was 4 for the week, and we over achieved it. The thing that made the difference was setting specific goals each day and working and making plans to accomplish them. It is something that we can always apply, making small goals each day to achieve the bigger ones over time. Focusing on accomplishing small tasks and not getting overwhelmed by the bigger ones. We receive line upon line, and we accomplish in the same way. 2 Nefi 28:30

I also had a case of the giggles during some contacts we did this week. One was just a lady that bounded to the door and opened with a huge smile on her face and greeted us. It just really threw me off guard and for whatever reason I found it super funny that she was so happy, or maybe her happiness was just contagious. Either way, I started snickering and then just couldn't talk anymore so my companion had to finish the contact. 

Later, a lady answered the door and was "talking to someone on the phone". She then turned her phone towards us as if to prove it, but her screen light up and showed that she was just playing a game similar to Candy Crush. She didn't realize what she had showed us, but then shut the door because she didn't want to talk to us. Probably for the best, because when she closed it I just looked at my companion and we both just burst out laughing. Lesson to be learned: Don't let your phone distract you from your eternal salvation, especially if it is something as silly as a video game.

This past week things returned almost to normal in our work in the sector. We really were able to take advantage of the extra hour in the evenings. It's a valuable time. We also had our Book of Mormon activity and it went well. Luciano came and shared his testimony of the Book of Mormon. It was special and awesome.  We taught the papa of a member here who is 17 and it was really great. His name is Jorge and we hope to see him progress well.  This week I leave Chile and return home to Texas. I will miss all of what the mission has been. But it has prepared me for what comes next: endure to the end! I am excited for the adventures ahead. The experiences I have had here, and the people I have met have changed who I am and I am very grateful for everything I have accomplished here. This week started off well on Monday night. We found an antiguo we wanted to go by in the area book and we knocked and talked to the lady who came out. She's a member turns out, and her husband is not. He has had many previous interactions with missionaries but never acted much before. Well, a minute or two after talking to her outside, he pulls up- home early from work (a very nice "coincidence"). I asked if we could go inside to meet them better and they said yes. We talked and got to know them for a bit, and the shared lesson 1. It was an incredible lesson and we even invited him to be baptized if he received an answer. He said he would! The catch was that later we asked him if he would pray to receive an answer and he responded that he would if he felt like it. He was unwilling to act to receive the answer. Week 40

The month of August has passed and with it I hope the cold and rain too! That is a hope in vain, but we did have some beautiful days this week and the sun is out now. Spring is coming and lots of trees are budding out in flowers. I might have to bust out my short sleeve shirts for when I shed my jacket in the afternoons. We had a lot of opportunities to teach our investigators and also to get to know them a little better. Gloria taught me how to make sopapillas, and Raul and Ana showed us around their home and kitchen where they make sausages to sell as their source of income. We also had the chance to offer little acts of service to Moises and various hermanas in the ward with different things. The better I get to know and love these people, the more my desires to help them grow. It is such a grand opportunity to meet and serve so many people.  I try everyday to better myself and search to do what the Lord wants me to do.
