week 54

This week we had the chance to do service with a man named Oscar. He invited us to come over one morning and help him sand 3 car doors he was preparing to paint to replace on his 1998 Subaru Outback. It was something different and fun. Oscar about one month back decided to quit smoking and left it from one day to the next after smoking for over 40 years. He did the same with alcohol quite a while back too. He and his wife are super friendly. We found them door knocking about 2 weeks ago. Service is great and helps us show the people we truly care about them. We also chopped a metro of leña for a sister in the ward this week. Got nice and sweaty but it is good work.

We found a new investigator named Scarlett this week while doing contacts. Her grandmother let us come and converse with her on her porch and while we were there, she showed up and sat down to listen too. We had a cita with her the next day too and then she came to church on Sunday! She is 16 or 17 years old. She is super nice. In the lesson the second time we taught her sitting on the grass in the plaza. After the lesson she showed us the guitar she had and played a bit and then we sang a hymn because she wanted to hear us sing.

Speaking of singing, we did a bit of it this week. On Saturday we went to the baptism of some other missionaries and they asked us to help them sing so we did. We sang Con el Salvador al Lado and I sang the second verse as a solo. On Sunday we helped with the primary presentation and sang with the 2 children, both are children of less actives/ part member families. It all went really well. Music always invites the Spirit.

We also had a lesson with an inactive sister that went really well and she expressed her desires to return to church and explained some of her challenges. I am grateful that we will get to help her and know her better. Her name is Olga and is the friend of someone from my last sector that i saw the other day and they said we should visit her.

We had another lesson with Maria Eugenia after helping her and her husband water their garden again during the week. We taught the plan of salvation and she listened so well and had read what we left her from last time. She is very intelligent and it is so fun to be with her and talk. And the mix of English too, although I typically speak Spanish because it feels more normal when I am talking to Latinos. She is going to progress if she keeps reading and praying. Her husband showed us an old vinyl record he had of the Mormon tabernacle choir. That was cool to see,and he played it for us.

First lady of Chile came to our sector this week too and that was pretty cool to get to see her and part of the presentation she did for the children. A decent amount of Caribeneros were present but nothing too crazy like I feel like it would have been had something like this happened in the USA. Crazy experiences one has in the mission!

Christmas is getting close and Elder Cano and I will pass it and New Year's together in San Pablo.

Love you all,

Elder Brighton
